Best Laid Plans

Some beautiful scenery...and some burly arms

Some beautiful scenery…and some burly arms

I could probably let the title of this post speak for itself…If you have ever road tripped with kids, you know what I am talking about.  If you have ever road tripped, you know what I am talking about.  If you have ever made a detailed plan for any purpose, you probably know what I am talking about.

The Plan started to unravel early on.  We had some hiccups with our rental car pickup, which led to the kiddos and I sitting in the airport parking lot for an hour while Alex straightened things out.  Sitting for any period of time when you are supposed to be rapidly covering ground is maddening.  We did pretty well the rest of the day, but then had to stop about an hour short of our goal destination.  The baby decided he had had enough and we agreed and found the nearest hotel with an INDOOR pool.  The heat was suffocating, even during brief pit stops.

The night proved to be quite difficult, mostly for me since I’ve been hit by a relentless summer cold.  The oh-my-gosh-I-can’t-stop-coughing-I-think-I’m-going-to-die kind of cold.  Getting three kiddos to sleep in a tiny hotel room with a pathetic sick woman hacking up a lung in the corner doesn’t usually go so well, in my experience.  So I quarantined myself to the bathroom for the better part of the night.  Staring at budget-friendly hotel bathroom tiles into the wee hours of the night can make a person feel a little crazy.  And I still managed to wake just about everyone with my coughing.  The lighter sleepers of the family (ahem- the baby…) were awakened multiple times.  But we somehow limped through the night and made it out the door this morning.

The kids are GRUMPY today.  They think the cool new things I bought them for the car are lame (who writes these Amazon reviews anyway?!?!)  They are not even entertained by movies today.  And Mr. Easy Going has been SCREAMING much of the morning (that’s Asher, not Alex).  So, remember when I said I was looking forward to leaning into my parenting role on this trip?  Guess its time to start leaning…

The drive has been beautiful today so that is reviving my soul a bit.  Hopefully some afternoon naps will help revive it even more.

Packed in pretty tight!
